Okay. So far, I am at a complete loss when it comes to picking one person out of this bunch we have running for the republican side of things. The first thing I want to tackle is "faith & politics." Please watch this video clip of Newt because I'm going to break it down as I see it.
http://youtu.be/gTbEdijP9XE
He starts by asking the question "Does faith matter?" and claims it "absolutely" does- and then goes onto say "How can we have a country that is founded on truths when it starts that we're in doubt by our creator?"
Alright, Newt... Sure. Faith matters, but only to a certain point. A persons lifestyle that revolves around that faith, I think, is important. We don't want a person of faith to be dishonest about their beliefs. Having a truly committed Christian/Muslim/Catholic/Whatever, is just fine... But faith should not be a prerequisite to attaining any political position, just as it shouldn't prevent you from becoming a doctor, nurse, teacher, etc... The United States prides itself on diversity. Why is it when it comes to religion/non-religion that we have an issue? OH!! That's because we live in a country that's 80% Christian... (I think it's 80% but I could be wrong. Needless to say, it's up there somewhere...)
Next, I would like to ask... What "truths" require religious faith to be true? Are you insinuating that a person without faith doesn't value truth? You completely lost me there.
And to clarify on the "Religion, Morality, and Knowledge being important" bit... It always strikes me as completely ignorant to insinuate religious faith is necessary to have morals... Morality and Knowledge do just fine by themselves without religion. Ask an atheist where he/she gets his/her morals... They will say that they do what is right based upon what they truly feel and think. Ask a theist and they will tell you they get it from ancient text... Which seems more genuine? Granted, religious folk have every right to seek guidance in being moral, but those who don't need a book to tell them not to lie, cheat, or steal shouldn't be faulted for their non-faith. This shouldn't be an issue when it comes to politics at all!
"None of us should rush into judgement about the way they approach God." Okay, Newt. Good on you for saying something politically correct... but you totally contradicted yourself AGAIN... by saying "How can you have judgement if you have no faith?".................. So you're not going to RUSH to judge others in the way they APPROACH God, but if you don't approach God, that's another thing altogether isn't it, Newt...? I don't need to reiterate that you don't need faith to have judgement...
And ever worse "How can I trust you with power if you don't pray?".... C'mon, Newt!! Don't be so ridiculous!
The big problem that I have with Newty boy over here... is simply that he is 100% full of excrement. How can we as Americans, who thrive on diversity and freedom to all men and women, elect this kind of douche bag into office? This stance on politics is so dangerous! We separate church and state for a reason and I believe that reason is to facilitate what America is all about; freedom. If Newt is elected, we will have the worst hypocrisy of a church run government that I can even fathom...
It goes on... As a gay man hoping to marry the man of my dreams, it is far from me to vote for this guy. Not only does he embarrass me as an American in general, he is an embarrassment to Christianity as a whole. He will fight against my right to marry, to be an equal to my fellow Americans based upon his religious beliefs... Yet this is the man who divorces his first wife while she is in the hospital with cancer to be with his mistress who he will later divorce for another mistress who is decades younger than him... And NEWTY-BOY is trying to protect the sanctity of marriage!!! Give me a fucking break.
I'm so behind you on this, but I just have to point out that he said "endowed" by our creater with certain rights, not "doubt". In other words he's saying faith matters because our founding fathers said we were given certain rights by a creater. Of course he's also ignoring that one of those rights is not to be persecuted for your faith or non faith. Or that you should have the right to publicly commit to the man of your dreams and have your government acknowledge it. Aside from that I'm pretty much with you on this.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Newt Gingrich will be the next president of the US. I am worried because so many people consider him a serious candidate, though.
ReplyDeleteI'm worried because this faith issue is common in all the major contenders at this point. It completely goes against everything this country was founded on.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mish, for pointing that out. Either way, endowed or in doubt, I don't like where he is going with this. It's definitely not looking good with the lot we get to choose from the republican side.
ReplyDeleteI really hope you're right Dessie. I don't know what's gotten into people who think he's so great.
